When it comes to the end of the school year, grading finals and research papers can be miserable enough. The inevitable student that pulls in after a 2 month bender in Slacker City makes a professor like me want to stab myself in the brain. Teachers can relate. If you can't, you will soon. Students are better off to just walk in and say, "I blew it. Can we fix this at all." Save the stories. Spare the excuses.
